‘’Geen woorden, maar daden’’
Simone Schuffelen is a visual artist, but describes herself as an artist, strawberry picker, court jester, multi-talented and full-time 'human and lover'. Her work cannot be grouped together under one heading. Sometimes she works on stage as a performer, other times she works behind the scenes as a maker. One thing is clear: the subject in her work is the personality of Simone herself. With absurdities in public space, swinging talk shows, once in a lifetimes dynamic advertisements, Simone engages in conversation with the public with extravagant performances.
Simone Schuffelen (1994, Voerendaal) lives and works in Rotterdam. After studying Fine Arts at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts Design in 2017, she received the Stipend for Emerging Artists from the Mondriaan Fund in 2020.
Residence at De Fabriek:
The starting point for the residency are the set pieces that Schuffelen has collected and made. Schuffelen is interested in theater and has recently been inspired by decor and paintings from the 1700s. The often 2D painted panels creates a 3D illusion due to their quantity and placement. At De Fabriek she wants to investigate this illusion with decor and painting and give the public a supporting role during the presentation. Furthermore, she wants to combine these pieces of scenery with her ‘collection of stuff’ that she brought to De Fabriek.
The urge to collect has a leading role in the work of Schuffelen, she uses the collection as material and a source of inspiration. Her ‘collection in disciplines’ as well as her collection of objects, vinyl, carnival clothing and furniture.
